International Tibet Network Members' Message
5 February 2013

Dear Network Members,

This is a follow up Tibetan New Year (Losar) message. In our last email we highlighted the importance of the occasion to Tibetans and listed some recommendations for the first day of Losar on 11 February. The second part of this message is about the third day of Losar, which falls on Wednesday (Lhakar), 13 February. This day is particularly important this year because it is the centenary of the 13th Dalai Lama's 1913 reassertion of Tibetan Independence.

Losar - Tibetan New Year

Losar is one of the most important Tibetan events of the year. This year, Tibetans will observe the first day of the new year with traditional ritual and offer prayers. The Tibetan government in Exile has appealed to Tibetans to pray instead of party at Losar, in solidarity with Tibetans who have self-immolated. http://bit.ly/YPiCEE

International Tibet Network has devised some recommendations and resources for you to show solidarity with Tibetans through activities.

Recommended Actions for Day 1 of Losar - 11 February
(See kNOw Losar: A page dedicated to information about Losar with a collection of Losar-related Youtube videos. www.ihearttibet.org/losar/)
- Send Losar postcards to your elected representatives, asking them to press your government to join other nations in diplomatic initiatives for Tibet [Available to download - English only - from https://tibetnetwork.org/resources-losar2140]
- Send New Year postcards to Chinese Embassies, wishing them a happy Chinese New Year and asking for China to change its policies this year. [Available to download with a message in English from https://tibetnetwork.org/resources-losar2140]
- Send solidarity messages to Tibetans on social media.
- Ask supporters/the public to sign the Stand Up For Tibet Pledge: Set up a signature booth and encourage supporters to pledge to take action for Tibet in 2013. www.standupfortibet.org
- Hold a Losar gathering featuring traditional Tibetan food and discussion.

The Losar resource page has more detailed recommendations as well as further suggestions. Please visit: https://tibetnetwork.org/resources-losar2140

Recommended Actions for Day 3 of Losar - 13 February | Lhakar | Centenary of Reassertion of Tibetan Independence
In 1913, the 13th Dalai Lama returned to Tibet after being exiled in India for two years. Soon after returning, he issued a proclamation that reasserted Tibet as an independent nation.

In a previous email, we told you that a number of Tibet groups have plans to organize creative events on this day. The following page https://www.tibetnetwork.org/13February_Reassertion_Tibetan_Independence has been developed to help groups participate on Wednesday 13 February. It consists of suggested actions and materials promoted by various Tibet groups and we will continue to add more information as we recieve it.

International Tibet Network encourage Groups to use this significant date to highlight the relevance and importance of Tibet's historical independence, regardless of your standpoint on Tibet's future political status. As the centenary falls on Lhakar we suggest that groups holding weekly events incorporate specific activities into their plans.

- Read and share the text of the Proclamation. Share in public and share on-line with supporters. SFT have translated the proclamation into a number of languages, please see link on https://www.tibetnetwork.org/13February_Reassertion_Tibetan_Independence.
- Organise or join events to educate the public about Tibet's independent past.
- Organise or join direct actions at Chinese Embassies and Consulates in your country/area to support Tibetans' demand for freedom from Chinese rule.
- Hoist a Tibetan Flag at your office, on your house or display it in your window and encourage more people, shops, libraries etc to do the same.

Sincerely,

Jigme
