Old Dog
Dir: Pema Tseden

From the leading filmmaker of the New Tibetan Cinema comes this mesmerizing, emotionally gripping story about an old sheepherder and his grown son, a visually stunning portrait of rural anomie that takes a completely modern approach to narrative, patiently accumulating detail by telling detail.  (China/Tibet 2011, 88 min).  For tickets and showtimes visit

Film screening "Leaving Fear Behind" followed by Q & A with Lhamo Tso
Amnesty International West
350 Sansome Street, Suite 210
San Francisco

Come and hear first hand Lhamo Tso, a mother of four and the wife of imprisoned film-maker Dhondup Wangchen, talk about her husband and his documentary "Leaving Fear Behind" that focused on how Tibetans in Tibet felt about the 2008 Beijing Olympics and for which he was detained by the Chinese authorities in March 2008.

Dhondup Wangchen had just completed filming an extensive series of interviews with ordinary Tibetans who had bravely voiced to camera their true feelings on the upcoming Beijing Olympics and the Chinese occupation of Tibet. The interviews were smuggled out of Tibet at great risk and have been made into this remarkable documentary which has been seen screened in more than 30 countries and which was secretly shown to journalists on the eve of the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Join us to hear from Lhamo Tso, and learn of more ways in which you can help in the release of Dhondup Wangchen.

Prior to hearing from Lhamo Tso we will be holding a wine and cheese reception featuring local Tibetan artists. Come join us at the Amnesty West office in San Francisco for this amazing event!

1959 Lhasa: The Truth  vs Propaganda: What Really  Happened?

A talk by historian Jinglin Li

In March 1959, a series of events  marked the turning point of Tibetan  history. In the official version of the  Chinese government, the Lhasa Event  has been described as a "pre‐arranged  rebellion attempting to split the motherland".  However, in the past 52  years, few detail were released to  support the official conclusion.

What  really happened in March 1959?  Why  did Tibetans surround the summer palace? Why the "Lhasa Event" developed  into "Battle of Lhasa"?  What's the  casualty from both side? What is the  aftermath? Jianglin Li historian and  author of 1959 Lhasa! will discuss  details of her research on the March  1959 Lhasa events.

Surviving the Dragon: a Tibetan Lama’s Account of 40 Years of Chinese Rule

Surviving the Dragon is the story of Arjia Rinpoche’s upbringing as the reincarnated abbot of Kumbum monastery, one of Tibet’s largest.  As a child, he was treated like a living Buddha, but after the Cultural Revolution, he was forced to shed his robes and perform heavy labor, including emptying latrines.  During China's drive to modernize, he rose to prominence within the Chinese Buddhist bureaucracy.

When he was slated to become the tutor of the Chinese-selected Panchen Lama, he fled Tibet rather than betray his Buddhist religion, values, and his Tibetan and Mongolian heritage. Arjia Rinpoche’s unique experience provides a rare perspective on this tumultuous period of Tibetan and Chinese history, as well as a glimpse of life inside a major Buddhist monastery in Tibet.

Protest the "Celebration of the People's Republic of China," event description here

What: Protest the "Celebration of the People's Republic of China," event description here

Who: All Tibetans and supporters

Where: Cow Palace (arena), Geneva Ave & Santos St, San Francisco, CA 94134 (close to Daly City)
Transportation from the East Bay will be provided to all those who RSVP as soon as possible to 510-666-1355. The rented van/bus will leave from El Cerrito Plaza at 11:30am on Sunday and will bring people back in the afternoon.

When: This Sunday, Sept 20, from 1pm-4pm

Why: October 1st will mark the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and, needless to say, the Chinese government has planned many high-profile events in cities all over China and around the world to "celebrate" their 60 years of rule and spread more propaganda and lies about the "peaceful progress" they have made. In the U.S., huge celebrations are taking place both in Washington DC and San Francisco on Sunday, Sept 20. This is strategic timing for the Chinese, since Hu Jintao will be arriving in New York on Sept 21 and will address the United Nations general assembly (the first time ever a Chinese president has done so).

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to the largest overseas Chinese population in the world and this will likely be the largest PRC anniversary celebration to take place outside of China. In light of this, it is crucial that Tibetans and supporters take this opportunity to stand up and tell the truth of the Chinese Communist Party's 60 years of occupation and persecution. We must send a message to Hu Jintao and China that our protests will continue to disrupt their propaganda efforts, and show the rest of the world that opposition to China's rule in Tibet is stronger than ever.
